Is my board kaputt or am I a bit dumb?

Hi

I'm completely novice with Arduino.

I've got a board model "mega 2560 R3", with ATmega2560 microcontrooler.

I cannot upload any programme. I notice that my computers (win 7 and XP) don't react when I connect the board. The green LED lights, but nothing else. If I push the reset button, no other LED lights or blinks (is there a bootloader?)
I've tried bot COM ports available (1 and 4), but nothing happens.

Is my board kaputt?

If there's no bootloader, how can I fix it?

thanks

My Mega clone uses a CH340 for the serial to USB interface wich needs a special driver.

Hi!,

thanks but I'm afraid I may need additional help

I've downloaded and executed it but nothing changes. Windows' device manager doesn't show any changes.

Do I just have to execute (install) the driver?.

thanks

It worked for my Mega (and Nano) clone on Win 7 after installing the driver.

Did you try to disconnect/connect the Arduino?
Reboot should not be necessary but will not hurt.

Are you shure the USB cable is good and works with data?

What unregognized object do you see in the device manager, if any?

With "unrecognized object" I mean that no change is seen on the device manager when I (dis)connect the Arduino board, neither in the USB section nor in the Serial Ports one.

I've tried two different USB cables

Can you try a different USB 2.0 port?

Sometimes hubs can introduce problems (and get disconnected from the pc).
My Arduinos work perfectly behind hubs.

Devices without driver normally generate a yellow exclamation-mark entry,
where you can find more information about the device.

Attaching and detaching a device to USB should generate some activity in the device manager, regardless of driver support.

Other devices work on the used port?

Hi
this is why I think it malfunctions, there's no such activity.

Other devices do work on the same USB ports.

If there is no bootloader, could it be fixed?

thanks

I have no idea what USB frontend your Mega variant has.

If it is an Atmel chip, there could be a problem with its firmware (quite rare I think).
Other chips could only be damaged, badly soldered, missing, ...

This is, I think, the board:

Sorry, I only own clones with not so compatible USB chips, I have no experience with 16u2.

Could be the Atmega16U2 has no code loaded then. Browse the forum on how to download code into it.

For "10.32$" it's likely not a legit Arduino board, but a clone.
You pay your money and you take your chances on those.

I try to upload code into it but it always reports an error, this is why I've opened this thread.

I get surprised you think there's no code uploades into the board, wouldn't you refer to the bootloader?

This is the reported error:

I'm using the default programmer, aVrisp mkII, but i've tried with others too.
I've selected board "Arduino mega 2560"

Apart from this, Window's device manager show no sing of niticing the board is connected to the USB
I've tried several computers and USB cables
