Is the Wiznet 5001 shield suppose to get pretty hot?

I have the ethernet shield. The chip that saids "Wiznet 5001" gets really hot when the Arduino Uno is powered on. It's not even running a sketch that uses the ethernet module, just sitting there running the blink sketch and the chip gets really hot to the touch.

Is that typical for this shield?

Generally speaking, yes the 5100 chip runs hot and is somewhat of a power hog..

Has anyone tried installing a heatsink to the main chip on the Wiznet? Maybe use those thermal adhesive? Would that help or is it more likely to hurt?

Heatsink rarelly hurt when they don't short the circuit you know
