Is there a cheap ghetto XBee clone out there?

Couple of really interesting Xbee discussions going on at the moment, thought about hijack with my question but decided it could do with its own topic.

I’M POOR!

Thats right, I can look at a shinny XBee and think of 1000’s of things i would love to do with it…but $30 turns to £30 by the time we get them over here!

So is my only other option a cheap Chinese RF modules?

What do you need to do in RF? What range? How many devices are you going to
use?

Here is my “bakc of the napkin” calculations for 2.4GHz radio components in low volumes –

Transmit/Receive Radio Parts + PCB $2-$3
T/R Radio + Zigbee $8-$10
Integrated Solution (XBee) $20

On my not-quite-ready list is this radio PCB – http://tinyurl.com/yl53nju
This would be the $2-$3 in parts solution. 1 QFN and a bunch of 0402s.
Unfortunately the length of the not-quite-ready list gets longer each day

Again, you need to look at your planned uses but, especially for one-way traffic there are some cheap modules at sparkfun.

That’s a problem, don’t have a project decided, just was looking for something to have in the hat for when I wanted to pull it out, Xbee seems to be the Daddy, and where there is a Daddy there tends to be cheaper stepfather clones…where is the Ybee that dose the same job for half the price!

Sparkfun stuff is a lot more expensive for us here in the UK with all the added extras like import tax :’( , so ebay tends to be the option of chose, with sellers being more flexible with tax declaration forms!

No the Zigbee is the daddy and the Xbee is the cheaper stepfather clones, you have reached the bottom already.

What about mom’s creepy friend from work? ;D!

if you want ghetto, (im king of ghetto … not by choice) I got a weather station thingie that has 1 receiver (base) and 2 transmitters (from the remote probes) … cost at the thrift store … 2$

ripping them apart gained me the radios as modules (well pcb with a wire would be more accurate) and they had a 3 wire connection pwr gnd and data

course they are 3v modules, have short range (about 100 foot or so), no error control or anything else for features (so good luck getting your data 100%!)

looks like im going to have to sell my body for a Xbee then!

Any idea what kind of power is needed for30-40feet to a bedroom upstairs. Need 2 TX and 1 RX. Just so I can monitor the temp of the babies bedrooms.

For an XBee, if you transmit a temperature reading every couple of minutes you should be able to get your average current down to around 20-30uA.
