I doubt we'll add official support for this, as the request is not wide and debugging an AVR can turn out to be complicated.
However, the Arduino community is capable of accomplishing some amazing things, so there's always the chance we will see unofficial support. My hope is that the debugging system has been designed in a manner that allows the community the flexibility to expand the capabilities of the IDE, just as the Arduino boards platform system has enabled the community to add support for a huge variety of different microcontrollers and development boards.
