OK this is stupid. I know this has nothing to do with Arduino, but I trust this community more than any other online...
I want to re-install windows. Unfortunately my partner uses iTunes for her iPod. Obviously the whole DRM aspect of all this sucks.
So how/what can I do so that after reinstalling Windows (and iTunes), her iPod continues to recognise the PC as the same one and it continues to work seamlessly?

DRM is keyed of the mac address of the computer. That won't change because you re-install the operating system, or install a new one.
Or if it doesn't have any of your music, use a program to get the music off the ipod then import it into itunes. if it won't let you play it, and a message like "this computer is not authorized to play #####(account name) music." go up to authorize and type in your info.
I recently went through this when my hard drive failed and i ahd to re-install Mac OSX
