JTAG ICE3 unable to enter Programming Mode

Ive been using ATMEL JTAG ICE3 for years to burn new clean chips.
Recently, I started on a new set of boards - existing code - worked before...
I also tested on boards that I have previously progammed with the ICE3

However, when I run up the Microchip Studio 'Device Programming' applet, it says ity's unable to enter Programming Mode.

The ICE3 is present, the Device is set properly - (in the current case using ATmega1284P chips...)

ISP mode is set, the target voltage is ok, but when I press [READ] to retrieve the target signature - it throws an error (attached)
jtag error

I tried a couple of identical (custom) boards that have been working normally, as well as an Arduino UNO R3 (with the appropriate 328P device settings) - getting the same results.

Everything worked fine for the last four years, something has changed, but I have no idea what !!?

I updated the ICE3 drivers a few months ago, it's worked flawlessly several times since then...

Any ideas ?
