I seem to always get in a mess when I bread board a circuit.

Hi, been there done that, can't see the other end of lead, ya got to probe deep to get the short leads out.

Keep all your male to male leads in a separate place from your male to female leads.
Don't forget your female to female leads also.
If you use the Velco method above, you see who is who.
