Junior Accounts, Web Editor, and Chromebooks

Hello,

Several of my middle school/ elementary students are going to be using Arduino Uno's. I've set them up with Junior accounts but they can't access the web editor and they can't download the Arduino IDE because they all have Chromebooks. Is there some work around for this? Are Junior accounts just not able to use the web editor?

AFAIK the IDE doesn't run on Chromebooks. Lots of stuff doesn't run right on a Chromebook.

Hi @cwei-steam. Have you looked at the "Arduino Create for Education" Chrome OS app?:

I have looked at Arduino Create for Education. I've tried with a regular account and it works but it does not allow Junior accounts to use the web editor. Logging in with a Junior account on Arduino Create just takes it back to the Junior account profile with no option to use the web editor.

OK, sorry for the bad lead on that. Unfortunately I don't a Chrome OS device and also don't have experience with the junior account system.

Most likely not a solution for you, but it's my understanding that it is possible to run the Arduino IDE on a Chrome OS machine with a bit of effort:

Instructions here: https://forum.arduino.cc/index.php?topic=554826

As an alternative to that approach, there is also an arduino_ide package in chromebrew.

Thank you for your help! I will try and test it out on my students laptops. I will comeback to let you know if it works.

I'm having the same problem. We just want our kids to be able to program the Arduino from their Chromebook but after logging into their junior accounts they keep getting redirected to classroom.arduino.cc, which isn't helpful. Logging into our parent account lets us use the web IDE at create.arduino.cc/editor which is what we'd expect for the kids' accounts too.

The "Software" page says:

To program Arduino from a Chromebook, you can use the Arduino Web Editor on Arduino Cloud.

But this is clearly inaccurate. How can our kids program their Arduino on their Chromebook?

We are in the same position. From what I gather, it is not possible as using Arduino Cloud is forbidden for under 13s. Really unfortunate that there isn't a Junior version of the web editor available. :expressionless:

I am only replying to follow this thread and keep it alive as I am having the same issue. It doesn't make sense to me that they would not allow a student to access the software on one of the most common devices provided to students by schools.

Really need a better solution for Chrome books. You pretty much locked out all under 13yr Chrome book users from using Arduino, period. Which is a shame, given most schools run on Chromebooks.

Same problem/frustration here. Just bought kid a Chromebook because Arduino website says it was compatible with Chromebook, and keep hitting this web editor deadend.

Veterans Day 2022 here. I can't figure out:

  1. how to access web editor with Junior account. I keep getting redirected to the sign in page. Frustrating is an understatement. This is a pathetic disgrace.
  2. why there is no official notification regarding this deplorable state of affairs...

The best way I've found to navigate this is to use this Chromebook compatible web editor:

Duinoapp

The students don't need to register.

I hope you'll find this web service useful while the issue with junior accounts is fixed.
