I love that I can keep the Keyboard Shortcuts window open, then search in Keyboard Shortcuts and bring up, for example, all the fold and unfold commands on a single page. Nice touch.
The scroll bar contrast in the Output window was inadequate in light mode, but the high contrast dark mode works well for me, thanks. The colors will take some getting used to, but I'm probably better off looking at a dark screen.
Thank you to all Arduino IDE developers, for your good work on this excellent tool. Please take pity on us older nerds who engineer for fun (stablizing interface, please) and be kind to each other, it's good for you and the profession. Darwinian business practices suck, they're mean and contribute to excess production and consumption. Apologies if that last bit is offensive to anyone. I'm happy to remove it.
Thankyou for expressing your opinions. I've been endlessly put off by the all negative views on IDE 2.x. Now I feel one small step closer to giving it a try.
No detachable serial monitor was the show-stopper for me (running a triple-screen setup).
There have been many requests for that, which were ignored.
Or did they already add that?
Leo..
Not seeing it (yet). Agreed that the option to detach is important, it's not unusual to want to look at a long output listing. Not a show-stopper for me, but I'd definitely put it on my wish list.
Although it is not currently possible to move Serial Monitor to a dedicated window, it is already possible to move it to the right side of the main Arduino IDE window instead of to the bottom. You might prefer that placement.
I'll provide instructions you can follow if you want to configure the Serial Monitor location to the right side panel:
Press the Ctrl+Shift+P keyboard shortcut (Command+Shift+P for macOS users) to open the "Command Palette".
A menu will appear on the editor toolbar:
Select the "Preferences: Open Settings (UI)" command from the menu. ⓘ You can scroll down through the list of commands to find it or type the name in the field.
A "Preferences" tab will open in the Arduino IDE main panel.
Type arduino.monitor.dockPanel in the "Search Settings" field of the "Preferences" tab.
Select "right" from the menu under the "Arduino › Monitor: Dock Panel" setting.
Beyond awesome! Thank you ptillisch for this excellent option which fully addresses my needs. Perhaps a future version could promote this setting into a preferences panel? In any case, thanks again to you and all the developers who have provided so many of us with this powerful tool.
I used to use collapse a lot in ver 1 but have a problem with it in ver 2. It only collapses till it hits any character in column 1. I usually place "//" or "/*" starting in column 1 when I comment out code - that messes up collapse.
I now enable "Outline View" (F1 then select 'Toggle Outline View') and get a list of function headers, as well as variable definitions, in the left sidebar. Works great - I have assigned a shortcut key to it since it is not activated globally - only per sketch. It does add an icon on the far left column - below the icons for libraries, boards etc. - allowing the list to be closed and opened.

Moving the Serial pane to the side makes v2.x usable.
I find myself using the new IDE more often now, but still can't let go of 1.8.19
Another biggie is that v2.x doesn't work with files on my TrueNAS, where most of my archived sketches reside. Drag'n'drop and just opening a file on the NAS opens a new window, not the sketch. v1.8.19 complains, but has no problems with opening/compiling/saving to the NAS.
Another problem is enlarging (zooming in) text. This is following common Windows behaviour, and is easy with "Ctrl + mouse wheel" in v1.8.19. No such thing in v2.
Yes, I know it's Ctrl +/- , but the mouse is much faster, and only enlarges the text.
I do have respect for the v1.8.19 developers. No kudos for the v2 developers yet.
Leo..
Select File > Preferences... (or Arduino IDE > Settings... for macOS users) from the Arduino IDE menus.
The "Preferences" dialog will open.
Uncheck the box next to Interface scale: ☑ Automatic in the "Preferences" dialog.
Click the "OK" button.
The "Preferences" dialog will close.
"Increase Font Size" and "Decrease Font Size" will now only affect the size of the font in the editor view rather than the entire UI as is the case when the Interface scale: ☑ Automatic preference is enabled.
Behaviour seems exactly the same with/without the interface scale tick box.
Ctrl + "+/-/0" enlarges/shrinks/resets the whole interface.
Only "Editor font size" above it changes the text size.
Would be niche when that would be under Ctrl+mousewheel control, like v1.8.19.
Leo..
Win11 Pro.
Tried again with/without tick box. Behaviour seems the same.
Ctr +/- zooms everything, including icons.
Only "Editor font size" changes the text size.
Not a problem for me any more though.
Font size18 (was 14) will do for my eyesight.
