Kite project advice

Hi everyone,

I'm working on a project that requires integrating hardware into fighter kites -these are small square kites ala http://fighterkitecentral.com/img-trad/chilean%20fighter.jpg. I'll be working with kids in Rio to collect data on their kites and experiment with visualizations and online platforms as an extension.

I've started to wire up the following components to see what kind of data I get - but if anyone has any general tips in terms of best hardware to be used, good data to collect, and/or particularly light components I can use, that would be a great help:

-- Arduino Pro Mini 328
-- Altitude/Pressure Sensor Breakout
-- Triple Axis Accelerometer Breakout

Thank you!
Claudia

hi Claudia! I recently bought one of this http://www.gearbest.com/development-boards/pp_63967.html to get info on the quadcopter I'd like to build!
3 axis acceleration + 3 axis gyro + 3 axis compass + altitude barometric + temperature

I didn't received it yet but if it works as stated it's great  also you might like to know the speed and after some research I made on how airplanes calculate it, I found they use those so called "pitot tubes" and guess what?
I found they exists also with arduino breakouts http://wiki.ardupilot-mega.googlecode.com/git/images/ArduPilotMegaImages/pitot.jpg

I'm planning to put one of these on my quad. depending on budget you might also like to add a GPS or a camera module but for the camera you might need a DUE. (too heavy?)

dunno if all the stuff would fit on a kite but I wish to put as much sensors as I can on my quadricopter project.

@cbernett, your sensors will produce a lot of data. How were you planning on recording it?

I think she could stream to the ground (custom 2.4ghz antenna or zigbee would be really cool but power consuming) or using a microsd (easier). A battery to power all this stuff would be heavy but what about a little solar panel to help extending the battery charge?

anyway how much those kite can lift? I think she sould make some heavy loading testing with fishing leads...
