large buttons to be stepped on?

i have a project that needs about 30 large buttons that can be stepped on. the buttons would need to be about 3- 4 inches wide. some sort of flexible mat would be ideal, but at least somehow portable. any idea's for me on how to make something like this?

With only the description that you have provided, I suggest hinging two pieces of plywood with foil contacts on each piece. Perhaps a spring return.

If the mat compresses a bit then a conductive surface button on top would have different capacitance with a conductive surface on the underside. One would be grounded, the other get fed weak 5V. A mat could be put over that as long as the bottom one compresses.
