I'm thinking about starting a project to measure the distance of a discus or javelin throw
There are tons of different measuring sensors, but I'm not sure what path to go down
I want to be able to just hold up a stick somewhere within the arc and not have to align the sensor exactly every single throw
Any suggestions on how to tackle this would be appreciated

Use a RPi in the least.
So I was just thinking of putting some sort of distance sensor behind the ring and then having someone stake where it lands.
Same process that we use now, just without the tape
