I'm a newbie in this kind of area. So I just worked on some arduino based digital thermometer and when I turn it on, the lcd only display blank screen, and sometimes it shows white blocks when i change the potensiometer
Just a quick side note: always better use LCD with I2C interface, as it makes everything easier to handle and simpler cabling, requiring less (a few) pins, and includes contrast trimmer.
You can just either buy an I2C backpack and solder it to this very display, or buy an LCD display with its I2C already soldered. See HERE.
