Although I don't know how conductive stainless steel is, you might have done permanent damage to the Arduino.
You can write a small test sketch that e.g. toggles pin A4 HIGH and LOW (modify Blink example) and measure the voltage with a multimeter or blinks a led (don't forget the series resistor) and a small sketch that tests the input functionality (hook up a button and read it, see e.g. DigitalReadSerial example).
