Hi, first time using the forum, so I'm sorry if I'm asking in the wrong place, or asking the wring questions. I'm working on a project involving an LCD 16x2 I think its a HD44780, but I might be wrong. the pins connected to the lcd are rs = 13, en = 12, d4 = 11, d5 = 10, d6 = 9, d7=8. My issue is that the left half of the LCD prints out discolored characters, a image of such is attached below. I imagine this could potentially be a physical issue, but if anyone has any idea more specifically what it is I would appreciate the help. I also linked a image of the wiring made to the best of my ability. thank you for the help
That looks like the intensity needs adjusting. Turn the blue knob.
How snug is the fit between the LCD and the cutout?
I don't know about the physical construction of your particular display but I saw similar artefacts on displays many years ago when the internal zebra strip (not sure that's the correct name for it, but is the conductive strip that goes between the glass and the PCB) got disturbed.
The fix was to essentially disassemble the display to reposition the strip.
Does the display work correctly if you remove it from the panel?
Thanks for the response! The cutout is not snug, the entire assembly is kept within a box that can be opened and closed, with the cutout only sitting flush when closed. The display seems to work the same whether or not the lid is closed.
I picked up this project from someone else, so the lcd is soldered to the wiring, so i cannot remove it to test other configurations. As such I cannot access the bottom of the LCD, so likely cannot take it apart to check.
Thanks for the suggestion. I tried playing with the potentiometer, but the darker side fades out faster, so adjusting it doesn't seem to help.
Before you go straightening the tabs on the metal frame that go through the slots in the PCB to take the display apart, does gently pressing on the metal frame around the display in various spots change/fix the aberrations?
no, touching/pushing the metal frame in various places does not seem to have any noticeable effect
Iffy contacts on the zebra strips wouldn't be at the top of my suspect list then.
