I can't help much, but LCD displays have special timing and voltage requirements which really means a dedicated driver chip. Unless you want something really special, maybe a classic 1602 display with yellow back light which is also visible in daylight without the back light would do.
The viewing direction, in case that is not clear to you, relates to standard 12 hour clock dial at eye level. for 12 you look up, for 9 you look left etc.
Well, those displays will be useless to you as you do not have the corresponding display driver.
The display which 6v6gt suggests would be the most suitable for your purpose. Mind you I am not sure which one is also visible in daylight without the backlight.
