lcd help??

my lcd is not responding correctly because it is showing weird symbols

and this is the code

The code as posted performs correctly, so the problem must lie in your wiring connections at the Arduino, soldering, breadboard, jumper wires, etc.

You appear to have the power, contrast and backlight correct. The soldering on pin 3(contrast control) looks bad, but it is making adequate connection.

Focus on RS,RW,E, D4,D5,D6,D7. You have not show the connections back at the digital pins of the Arduino. Are they at the pins indicated

* LCD RS pin to digital pin 2
 * LCD Enable pin to digital pin 3
 * LCD D4 pin to digital pin 4
 * LCD D5 pin to digital pin 5
 * LCD D6 pin to digital pin 6
 * LCD D7 pin to digital pin 7
 * LCD R/W pin to ground

I would change the jumper wires as they can be defective. Try different breadboard holes. The soldering of the display header pins does not look very good and if the problem is not with the wires and breadboard, try to resolder the header pins.

I will try that thanks for taking the time to look at it though
