LCD - how to access the 2nd line?

I have the VK2220 panel working with the LCD4bit library from the playground. I can init a 2 line display but I can't find the command codes to move the cursor down to the second line. Does anyone know how this is done?

Can I preserve the text on the first line, while writing to the second?

Use the function: cursorTo(2,0); to set the cursor to the start of the second line. The first line should not be affected.
