LCD I2C Text issue - using hd44780 library [I2C module was not soldered to LCD]

Hello all. I am new to the hobby and am trying to get my LCD display to work with the I2C backpack that came with the kit. However, when I use the I2CExpDiag that comes with the hd44780 library, the text is the same color as the background. Attached are pictures of the wiring and what the LCD display looks like.

The text does display, it just does it very faintly. I've found sources that imply that it's a backlight issue, but I can't figure out how to fix it. Any help is greatly appreciated.

I just finished testing one about like yours.
Have you ran the i2c scanner to check the i2c address? Probably 0x27
Is it a 2x16 display?

There should be a blue box thing which has has a screw thing you can twist to change the text's brightness

have you soldered the PCF8574 module to the LCD module?

if not - solder it to your module.
if it is soldered, show us pictures of the backside.

Oh, i didn't know I had to do that. Thanks for the advice!

Also, when I do solder it, how should I do it? Image 1: (side-by-side)

Or image 2? (Sandwich):

Typically sandwich on the back side. Check that the pin signals match. Another option is to solder a socket header on the back and plug the I2C module into it.

Most are soldered onto the back of the LCD, like your lower pic.
