LCD screen displaying gibberish after code change

Hey Paul, the actual resistor that I used ended up being around 4.6k ohm, and it displayed just fine. I'm honestly quite a newbie with the arduino platform, but it just worked.

Likewise. 4k6 is "unusual".

I would expect something like 460R if VCC = 5V

Got it! I do have one. And the resistance reading for the resistor in topic is 4.7kohm. It allows me to read the letters and numbers in the display without much black background.
