led and light diode idea/help

hey there , im planning on buying an Arduino for an art project im thinking of , but i just wanted to check my idea out first and see if its actually doable before i go spending money , i ahvent used an arduino before but imagine that its not too hard anyway.
ok so my idea is to have a rectangle frame with groups of coloured led's in it , it would be a large frame say almost 75cm long at least , so it could hold alot of led's , and each group would have a light diode in the centre , and ontop of the frame would be frosted plastc, and when the user waved their hand over the frame , the section they waved over would light up and have a slight delay before turning off , so sort of a rainbow effect , is this at all possible ? , i understand that the Arduino had a limited number of ports also. thanks

It could be tricky. The waving of the hand over a light sensor requires there to be some light in the first place. Then when the LEDs light up this could fool the system into thinking the light had gone.

Like all beginners you think it is all too easy. Just start off and get one light sensor turning on one LED. Then you can think about scaling it up by adding extra ports, power supplies, LED drivers and all the other stuff you need.

It is perfectly possible but only when you get some experience.
