I've got this larger 2 coil (4 wire) nema 17 that lights up an led regardless of which wire combos I connect it to. Does this mean something is shorted out in the motor? I understand that only the coil pairs should light up the led when the led when connected to the wire and the motor is manually turned..
Did you short out (connect together) the 2 wires the LED was not connected to?
