LED displaying weird characters

Project: based on relay signal either turn on or off a solenoid. After running through the void loop have a counter that displays the cycle every time the code runs through the void loop - all this si complete and works fine

problem: when i add live voltage to relay the screen starts going nuts (see attachments 1) attachment 2 displays it working fine without live voltage

if anyone can help explain why the LCD is going nuts and how i can fix it that would be very appreciated.
does it have to do with my wiring?

Pls post a schematic (it's a waste of time to try to follow the wires on a picture) and your code, using code tags.
