LED Sign without led's in the 50/60's?

while watching a show on fashion, while i was slowly nodding off to sleep while my wife continued to watch...

All of a sudden something interesting appeared! - imagine a scrolling LED sign, without any LED's, this brought up 2 questions, what/how? anyway your
thoughts would be nice to read :slight_smile:

Maybe they had a paper tape with holes in it for the letters...similar to the technology invented by Mr. Jacquard in 1801.

All you need then is some photo resistors and a bank of vacuum tubes connected to light bulbs.
