I just ordered a WS2812B led strip, but I haven't seen it light up once with arduino (the only thing I've used it with so far). It is 5 meters with 300 leds. When I hook it to power it doesn't light up, but the end of the strip heats up a little bit.. I have it connected to a different power source (but ground still connects to the arduino). I would appreciate any help I got.
You need to add more detail about how you have wired it up.
Post a schematic and a photograph showing clearly where the wires go.

Are you sending the data signal to the correct end?
