LEGO Interface + Standardisation of Hole Layouts

My Arduino projects tend to quickly get quite messy (see attached picture for an example). The sturdy Dupont cables can cause different modules to collide, and even though it hasn't happened yet, this is a potential danger of damaging the delicate electronics.

So, my first idea is to create an interface part to safely attach an Arduino to a LEGO (R) baseplate (or the body of a LEGO robot).

My second idea is to create a LEGO compatible holder for external Arduino modules, like relays, sensors, RTC, you name it... This calls for a standard hole layout for modules. If the manifacturers of modules could stick to multiples of the LEGO stud distance, then all we need is one standard Arduino holder (4 holes) and a one hole support for the external modules (would normally take four of these to secure one module).

Or is there already an existing system to straighten up the projects?

That could totally be a project of your own!. I just advise you to go a bit deeper on the trademark and patents issue, because I don't think you can throw electronics into plastic bricks and call it "lego compatible"...

Also please have a look at the Mindstorms series, since it features a microprocessor (RCX, NXT, etc) and various electronics modules. You can prototype your ideas from there (I have done it myself in the past).
