Many thanks for that I didn't think it was that easy 
- would that example time between the pulses ? i.e. the LED flashes on for about 0.25 second fixed and the time between each flash varies. I was originally looking at PulseIN but would measure the length of flash and also it hangs while timing. I don't have an Arduino YET just looking at C code (I'm fairly good at electronics!)
