Tried most of the workarounds, none worked: don't know what happened, it just crashed on upload, I think...
When I press upload then press the reset button the program seemingly uploads, but doesn't, and the serial port is grayed out.

This isn't an installation issue, because it used to work. Can you post your sketch please?
Oh, I am just approaching intermediate, maybe, on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS, I tried other cords, which work on my other Leonardo.
And you're saying it's possible for code that's passed verification to cause those symptoms? Grayed out tools\serial port?
The dimmer/fader code is being used and the amber led shows up and blinks on reset, but again, afterwards it's just the green led.
You know what? Following your lead I went back to the original "fade" program tried the upload then reset workaround/fix and it, well ... it worked.
Tried uploading tried other code and it's working... weirdness.
What would you have looked for?
That your sketch doesn't open the serial port.
