Light Tracking, what's needed?

I am on a freshman engineering team and we are trying to design a light that automatically aims where the operator is looking. Our thinking is that it will sit on the roof of a car and the driver is the operator. I am hoping that some of you can enlighten us as to what we need to accomplish this type of project.

As of now we are thinking 2 gyros for x and y and 2 servos. The light will have up to 180 degrees of rotation and won't need more then 90 degrees in the y direction.

What else? We are relatively new at this stuff so any help or better approaches are definitely welcome.

Thanks, Kyle

You could do something similar to the way a helicopter gun ship pilot's helmet rotates the minigun turret. (poor man's version)
There has to be a stationary receiver and two transmitters (left side head, right side head) as the rotates the distances from each to the transmitter changes.
