Just set up my lilypad, drivers, software etc, and ran into issues with uploading sample code (got the stk500_recv() error). I worked through most of the troubleshooting to no avail.
My first question - when I reset the lilypad - there is no blinking light as it's suggested there should be. Is this a problem?

Mine doesn't blink either, nor does it when I turn it on the first time.
What version of the IDE are you running? if you are on 15, get 16... if you are on 16 already, make sure you have the right lilypad set up - under tools --> board, there are two versions, you can tell which one by looking very closely at the chip in the center of the lilypad (thats the ATMEGA), the numbers are somewhere in there... you might want to use a magnifying glass... or just look up the specs of what you ordered online, it should tell you which board you got.
Also, make sure you have the correct COM selected... under tools --> Serial Port
