MarkT, sure, and that is what we ended up doing for his science fair project due to time constraints. But it is much simpler to just not daisy chain regulators.

Yes, but daisy chaining will spread power dissipation across several devices. And, in fact, this can be more efficient, since, instead of power being dissipated in one circuit, there are multiple circuits, each dissipating a sum of power that is higher than the daisy chained version.
