Linux mint does not show a Port to use when compiling

No matter what I do I cannot get the port to show in the Arduino IDE when I run it using Linux Mint. I have done the dialout command but the Port is always greyed out. Cable and board are fine when used on a Windows system.
I am seriously considering giving up on Linux as I have wasted a lot of time on this problem. Does anyone know what can be done to fix this?

When you click in the drop-down for selecting a board and port...

Do you get this showing no port?

In a terminal do lsusb with and without the Arduino connected - what changes?
I plugged in a Mega2560 and the highlighted USB device appears

And in IDE I get this:

Is the board recognised when you use lsusb.
Does the port show in dmesg?

With dmesg it shows: for usb0 ch341 2-1.1:1.0: device disconnected

That makes me think it's drawing too much current from the USB port or something similar - or at least the USB port thinks your device is. I guess you've tried other cables and different USB ports too?

Disconnect Arduino from computer. Open a terminal and type:
dmesg -w |grep -i usb
What do the last few lines look like? Here's mine:

What do the last few lines look like? Here's mine:

[ 246.259076] ftdi_sio 3-7.3:1.0: FTDI USB Serial Device converter detected
[ 246.259109] usb 3-7.3: Detected FT-X

Type [CNTRL + c] to exit dmesg.

Or BRLTTY or modem manager throwing spanners in the wheels.

In the last 3 lines there is a line interface 0 claimed by ch341 while 'brltty' sets config #1 followed by ch341-uart ttyUSB0: ch341-uart converter now disconnected from ttyUSB0
This leads me to the conclusion that if I remove Braille it would work. How do you remove the braille?

Oh blessed relief! Removing BRLTTY did the trick. Now the port is available and I can upload Arduino sketches to a board. Thank you JCA34F, xfacta and sterretje for your help. This has caused me a lot of wasted time and I wonder why Linux Mint doesn't warn new users that about this sort of issue - maybe it does somewhere and I missed it?

Linux is not for the faint hearted
