Hello,

I'm having this problem with a project what even in 4-bit modus with my HD44780 lcd I don't have enough pins.

So I found this: http://www.arduino.cc/playground/Code/LCD3wires

And my question is now: Can I (and if yes, how) use the LiquidCrystal library together with this method? Are there any restrictions?

No.

No you cannot use the LiquidCrystal library with that (or any other serial) implementation. He has provided the various routines that you need to use the shift register but, as he mentions at the end, they are not yet implemented as a library. His LCD initialization routine does not follow the manufacturer's recommendations but it is close enough.
