i was looking at the autoscroll function and tested it out with the example and when autoscrolling was wandering if there is a way to make it only autoscroll 1 line and not all lines

liquidcrystal libray that comes with arduino 1.01
the display is a CU20025ECPB-U1J VFD which is LCD compatible

the display is LCD compatible
OK if you say so. HD44780 displays can only auto shift all lines together. There is no scroll. If you shift back, the characters that passed the display boarder are forever gone. Another member asked this question a week ago already:

Are you sure about that? When you use the shift instructions that are inherent in the LCD controller nothing gets erased from its RAM. Therefore when you shift the display back the original characters reappear. Of course things may be different when using a library.

You really ought to qualify this for the sake of those who read this thread in the future. As we established toward the end of another thread (4 bit LCD library and Hitachi HD44780 compatible display - #18 by floresta - Displays - Arduino Forum) the display appears to use the same instruction set as the HD44780 type LCDs but some timing differences seem to render it partially incompatible.
