LM2956 Buck Converter, 12V, and 5V Single Channel Relay

It might be good idea to test your setup in steps. When your solenoid setup works without hiccups, go forward. Debugging the whole setup at once can be challenging...

Yeah that’s what I am planning as well. Test the solenoid, if its smooth sailing, then I’ll put on the readers after and see if there are any abnormalities.

With 12V available, why not use a relay with 12V coil (30mA) instead of 5V (75mA)?

Kinda true? But isn’t my +OUT of my buck only outputs 5V max because I set it to? Therefore, it will not run the 12V relay anyway?

Stay with the 5V realy. Some 12V relays require a 12V input signal to activate and that would not work with an Arduino.

If you list the websites where you buy your parts, I can take a look to see what is available and would work in your set-up.

Is planning to anyway.

Here are also the shops where I am planning to buy my components:

circuit.rocks is a decent option as well

Pick a 5V relay that has separate power for the coil and for the trigger. You recognize them from extra pins occupied usually by a jumper. Pins named H/L like in post#29 or JD-VCC.
When you find, post here before you order.
Mosfet board with optocoupler is another option.

I found the same exact one. This will be one of my options aside from the others that I posted here

That's ok. Remove the jumper and wire it to Esp from the middle pin to 3.3V and IN-pin to Gpio

Wait, what is the purpose of the pin between the HIGH and the LOW pins?

To supply 3.3V to the optocoupler in your case.

That jumper is there so you can switch between HIGH and LOW level trigger on the IN pin. However if you put it to L (Low level) it will expose 5V to the IN pin and you do not want to connect that to the 3.3V ESP GPIO

If you connect the jumper to H you can connect the IN pin to a ESP GPIO and use HIGH to trigger the relay. However, since the modules are designed for 5V there is no gurantee that it will work with 3.3V levels on the IN pin.

***** Do you know how to solder?

Yeah, I do know how.

So, regardless, it is pointless to plug my ESP32s 3.3V pin and the IN of this relay together to force it to a 3.3V logic?

It was designed for 5V. It may or may not work with 3.3V

I tried to search on makerlab but everything seems to be sold out.
I found this on circuitrocks but it's much more expensive than the relay

Money is not really a problem to be honest. But, I’ll try with the relay first and if it doesn’t work then I’ll check this MOSFET out and try looking for more relays in Makerlabs physical store

Just make sure you have the jumper set to H

Yeah, and if it doesn’t work, I might even consider a logic level converter

No, that will not work.

You can easily drive the relay with a single transistor to make it work.
Can you find 2N3904 or BC547 or 2N2222

Yep just found one

Which one?

2N2222 transistor

If the relay does not work with 3.3V, you can use this circuit:

or buy the MOSFET module.
