Logic Level Converter? MPL3115A2 & Uno R3

I am a little confused about the need (or not) of a logic level converter when connecting this sensor to an Uno.

The sparkfun hookup guide mentions to "use inline logic level converters or 330 ohm resistors to limit 5V signals" but never goes into any detail about the resistor option.

I don't have a logic level converter at the moment.

Is this suggesting that I could use a 330 ohm resistor on the I2C pin in place of a logic level converter? If so, is there a benefit or downfall to either of these options? I'm just playing around and learning. Would anyone be willing to guide me in this area?

Suggest you use a proper logic level converter.

You can make your own.

Some logic level MOSFETs, I like the IRLML2502.
