Looking for LCD 'Listening Post' style

hej forum

we are looking for a Character LCDisplay with white ( or whitish ) characters on black background. much like the ones used in the ever-so-beautiful installaltion 'Listening Post' ( http://www.earstudio.com/projects/listeningpost.html )

we found some on sparkfun ( http://www.sparkfun.com/commerce/product_info.php?products_id=709 ) which are pretty cool already but don t exactly meet our requirements ( i.e. only 16x2 characters ).

does anybody know where one can buy such displays?

From the pictures, the Listening Post displays look like vacuum fluorescent displays (VFDs).

and i think they were vfd’s, same thing but with florescent light, more expensive and harder to work with

Try this: http://www.mouser.com/catalog/637/75.pdf

These displays are VFDs indeed.

VFDs, yes of course; now that you all mentioned. Thank you all very much for your feedback.

In the meantime I purchased a Samsung 20L203DA5 VFD Display. It is quite big, very bright and very power thirsty.

And to share some knowledge about it: it is not 'hd44780' compliant but controlled via RS232. Whoever plans to use it should note that the RX/TX pins on the arduino board don t supply the necessary -12/12Volt communication. We needed to add a Maxim MAX3232 transceivers to convert the arduino serial command to proper RS232. might be helpful to some of you.
