I have read the instructions for doing the "Loopback Test" here:

However, I am stuck at step # 6 and #7.
I am using Linux Mint 17.3 operating system. I have Chinese cloned 5V 16M Nano V3.0 Mini ATmega328 Micro-Controller boards.
I cannot do my very first upload. Permission denied.
I have tried setting different ports. Tried different board settings. etc.
To no avail.
Can someone advise please?

The Loop-back test doesn't work very well with Clones using the Ch340g chip.
When you select the Nano in the Arduino IDE make sure you also select Old bootloader under Processor.
Many thanks for the reply. I just scanned through the link instructions quickly and they provide several possibilities for sorting my problem.
The "groups" selection etc. is enough to make my head spin for a week!
However, I will try and suspend understanding and follow the instructions carefully.

That solved my problem, thank you very much. It was yet another Linux Permissions problem! (I have history in that regard......don't ask!).
While I am here, I need some instruction of how to use these forums.
So far, I am unable to go to the site and find my posts. Must be something simple I am missing.
Please direct me to the appropriate "questions for dummies" section if necessary.

Easiest way
1)
click your name / avatar next to one of your your posts.
2)
Under your avatar on the new page, click show posts.
3)
Book mark the page. This should be yours: Profile of Jim0000
Problem with the above is that your first need to find one of your posts.
Alternatively
1)
click on the user icon in the right top of the page and select profile
2)
Clicke edit next to forum settings
3)
Under your avatar on the new page, click show posts.
Only a drunk monkey could have thought that it made sense to put it under 'edit forum settings'.
