Low cost "home" for 28-BYJ-28 stepper?

I'd like to use a 28-BYJ-48 stepper to operate a relative bearing indicator dial in a simple radar simulator. I'll need to go to a zero position at power up. I've looked at Hall-effect sensors... Would this be over-kill? Has anyone done a simpler scheme? Also thought of a tiny microsswitch operated by a nub or point on a disk. Other ideas?

Microswitches are often used for that purpose, and would be the simplest approach. Another is to use a lever and a photointerrupter.
