Machine vision in arduino for sorting of PET bottles and aluminium cans

Is it possible to use arduino to sort PET bottles and aluminium cans using the machine vision system? For my project I need to sort these two waste category in two separate compartment. I want this to be a standalone sorting system.

But it's different, as it tries to seperate aluminum from plastic - which is quite easy: the usual aproch is to use a metal detector + light barrier + airpressure. If it's metal, let it stay. If it's plastic, blow it from the line.

The problem is that it is a sorting bin for these two waste category. The bin will be placed in public areas. People disposing waste may throw in other metal product type not just aluminium cans. Then the aluminium cans will be compacted inside the same bin. Also, people may not be disposing only PET bottles, they might dispose other plastic product type not having the usual shape of PET bottle(water,beverage, etc). The PET bottles will also be compacted. Instructions will be made clear what type of waste are accepted in the sorting bin which is only PET bottles and aluminium cans. However, they might not always abide by the instructions.

Arduinos are learning tools and are too small and slow for machine vision applications.

This is a very much more complicated requirement compared to what your Title conveys.

Your Title implies that you want to sort A from B. But now you tell us that first the A and B have to be picked out from the whole alphabet. And what about things that are part metal and part paper or plastic, or covered in food waste (or dog waste)?

Probably not. When you figure out how to distinguish PET materials from other materials, then an arduino might be of use.
