Macro shot with Arducam Mini 2MP

Hello, I would like to ask if it’s possible to make sharp close up shots with ArduCAM mini 2MP version? I need to take a photo of an ID card (8.5cm in size) and it should ideally be sub 10cm close. Is the module capable enough for this task? I’m not sure if the card would be in the focus range and if the FOV is wide enough.

What solution would You eventually suggest?

Thanks in advance, Jan

You can move the lens away from the sensor and get a close up zoomed effect. Use an extension tube.

I was not sure if I can unscrew the lens. I don't have the ArduCAM module yet and I didn't want to buy a thing I wouldn't have a use for. However if the lens are unscrewable it would probably work.

Thanks

They thoughtfully don't provide a focus distance in the specification, however, in looking at THIS sheet, it looks like the lens can be focused (manually) by screwing it in or out (although it does not indicate what the minimum focus distance is). You can also buy fairly inexpensive "closeup" lenses you could adapt to the front of the existing lens to get macro. You need to decide if 2mp gives enough resolution for what you are trying to do - also remember when you get close you typically don't have a flat field of focus.

A common lens mount for those small cameras is a 12mm or a type 'CS'. I would suspect that it unscrews from the sensor. Position it outwards to get the desired effect then buy the appropriate extension tube.

The sheet I linked indicated that "The ArduCAM-M-2MP camera shield is shipped with default LS-4011 (S mount) or LS-6018 (CS mount), lenses specification list as follows. S mount lenses normally have build IR
cut filter, while the CS mount lenses doesn’t have build in IR cut filter.

Section 6 of the specs says that an S-mount is an M12-0.5(12mm). It's also available in a CS mount but both are changeable. The OP will have several choices to solve his problem.
