"Make sure you're using the version of avrdude that comes with Arduino"

Ok, so I posted originally that I couldn't get my mega to upload and that I suspected that the bootloader was dead. A friend brought over his duemilanove so we could try to recover the bootloader using the duemilanove as ISP. I got the sketch uploaded to the duemilanove and have two 220-ohm resistors in parallel between the 5V and reset pins (to disable the auto-reset) and everything else hooked up as directed in the instructions at http://arduino.cc/en/Tutorial/ArduinoISP. I have the correct board selected (Arduino Mega 2560 or Mega ADK) and the correct port; I have the programmer selected as "Arduino as ISP" and have the USB connected to the duemilanove. When I click "burn bootloader" I get

avrdude: Yikes! Invalid device signature. Double check connections and try again, or use -F to override this check.

Looking at the troubleshooting list here http://www.arduino.cc/en/Guide/Troubleshooting#toc23 it says I need to "make sure [I'm] using the version of avrdude that comes with Arduino."

So the question today is... how do I make sure I'm using the version of avrdude that comes with Arduino??? And how do I correct that if I'm not?

System information Windows 7 64 Arudino 1.0

avrdude: Yikes! Invalid device signature. Double check connections and try again, or use -F to override this check.

Says that avrdude found that the device signature does not match the configured device settings. So the first question is: what signature did avrdude find and which device/board did you configure. Set the preferences to verbose output and look at this output. Once the device signature is known it is much easier to infer if the connections or the device settings are causing the issue. Installing a different avrdude version might probably not fix this issue.

If you haven't installed another version, you do.

With verbose output enabled and trying to bootload, I get the following output:

C:\Program Files (x86)\arduino-1.0\hardware/tools/avr/bin/avrdude -CC:\Program Files (x86)\arduino-1.0\hardware/tools/avr/etc/avrdude.conf -v -v -v -v -patmega2560 -cstk500v1 -P\.\COM4 -b19200 -e -Ulock:w:0x3F:m -Uefuse:w:0xFD:m -Uhfuse:w:0xD8:m -Ulfuse:w:0xFF:m
