Make your own 16x2 LCD?

Hey there

Just wondering - is it possible to make your own 16x2 LCD screen? All I can find are LCD like that, which are already mounted on a PCB:

So I was thinking if it was possible to buy the actual LCD screen without the PCB, and then mount on your own PCB with a HD44780 chip for example?

Thank you!

Why? :astonished:

I find this a strange question. You must be able to buy the LCDs; as a general rule if someone makes something then it's usually possible to buy those things. The way to find out is to start with internet sales web sites and search for them. If that fails then contact component distributors and manufacturers. You may well find you can buy them but that the prices for small quantities will make it not worthwhile.

Assuming you can buy the parts at a price you are willing to pay then you have to work out how connect them and make them work.

Unless you are going to manufacture displays in large quantities, or unless you have a specialist requirement that means the ready made ones are not suitable for some reason, I am pretty sure that making them yourself will not make economic sense.

there are various LCD out here - even without PCB.
just any random product

and there were how to's available in the 70's / early 80's how to make you custom LCD, but who want's to do that burdon today ...

noiasca, sorry, that link returns 404 error....

Ha ha I was expecting a lot of "why"
I appreciate the answers a lot though

The main reason is curiosity, and yes I agree it would probably not make sense economically. But from all these answers I still do not know how it would be possible. @noiasca: yes but that is a 7 segment LCD. Is it not possible to buy something similar but for a 16x2 characters LCD?

I could not more agree! But I have been fighting with that rule a lot lately - among other things will cases and button caps - realizing that most of them are custom made, but that is off topic
I still do not know where all these LCD manufacturers buy the actual LCD screen itself.

Well, that's obvious! A secret factory in China!

Seriously, if you really need to know you have to start asking manufacturers and distributors.

Ha ha Perry

Well I am thinking if I have to ask the manufacturers it probably isn’t something β€œeasy” to buy then - but thanks I will ask.

Depends how many you want and how much money you want to spend. I am sure if you want 100000 then they would be easy to buy. There are distributors for smaller quantities.

It is not rocket science. You just need to copy the 16x2 pcb design on your own pcb. Buy the SMD components and the black blobs. Mount them on your pcb.

The LCD panel could be made to your custom design. And attached to your pcb with a similar zebra strip.
The LCD panel is just a glass sandwich with printed electrodes that make the custom icons / shapes / pixels.

I would guess that any LCD panel manufacturer would want a substantial order quantity. But you would have your own unique panel.

The pcb and black blob assembly will be in your territory. After all, you design your own pcbs.

I suspect that buying COG displays will be more cost effective unless you are intending to make 10000 or more.
