Making an Arduino Clone, rules?

Hi,

I was thinking of making my own version of Arduino, and was wondering how I can reach this goal. Can anyone point me in the right direction? For instance, is there any legal things I should know about, like to write "Open Source" on the board.

Also, any tips for what programs I should use to design the board, and where to get them made. I have never made an Arduino before, so of you could help me that would be awesome,

thanks!

Well from that I'm assuming it's not going to be a commercial product, rather a board you are going to use. In which case, do as you wish pretty much.

If it's commercial then you don't have to write anything on the board and there's not really any legal things I can think of. Once you start to look into how an arduino board "goes together" you will start to understand the answers to a lot of your questions (which you haven't asked yet).

I suggest you take a look at the many other derivitive boards that are out there as a starting point.

What are the rules on using the VID and PID of the Uno?

There are other threads on this now but basically for commercial boards it's a no go.
If you're just making them for you to use then you can use any VID and PID you like (which doesn't interfere with other devices on your system) as nobody's gonna know.

Massimo is trying to negotiate a PID to be used for non-commercial hobby boards.
