Well, the first thing you will need is knowledge. Several cartons of knowledge. Then, you'll need some more.
Next, you'll need some requirements. Without those two items, your project is a non-starter.
If you don't know what you want to do, you won't know what you need to accomplish the requirements.
A quick peak at the forum topics reveals that there is a category for Home Automation and Networked Objects. Spending some time lurking there would be useful.
