Maximum lead length

I'm working on interfacing an Arduino Nano with some 110V equipment (lamps, etc...) via an MOC3010 optocoupler. The optocoupler and all of the HV circuitry will be located on perfboard in an enclosure while the Arduino, logic, and LV circuitry will be on a breadboard (I'm being careful to isolate everything). What I need to know is the maximum distance from the Arduino I can mount the optocoupler and the related HV circuitry.

Thank you for your help.

I think the biggest constraint will be resistive loss due to current, and I can't see that being very big for any reasonable wire size. If you use 30AWG magnet wire, maybe you'll have a problem.

I wouldn't be surprised if it worked just fine at huge distances since your output is just a current loop to a low impedance optocoupler.

Thanks for the quick reply.

So, something like Ethernet cable (IIRC, 22 or 24 AWG) would suffice for runs of a foot (30 cm)?

suffice for runs of a foot (30 cm)?

Yes that will be fine.
