Maximum wire length between Arduino and LCD?

Hello,

Just wondering what the maximum practical wire length is between an Arduino and a 595 shift register, or the shift register and the LCD? If my wires are around 4 feet will this cause problems if I am using single conductor, untwisted and unshielded wire? Or, at these lengths, should I use twisted shielded wire?
