This is definitely a good news for developers. Seeed Studio decided to cut down the price of Propaganda PCB service . The new price will start from 13 USD/ 5 PCs. (2 layer, 5cm X 5cm max, no E-test, Open source PCB). See below for more.
We also provide 4 layers PCB service start from 105 USD/5 PCs.(Open source, No E-test).
From what i understand you get 10pcs for 30$. if you declare your PCB open source, so they might be able to salvage it for their own needs (not meant in a negative way!) then you pay 12$ less and get 5pcs.. So, one way or another you pay between 2,4$ and 3$ per PCB.. which is rather cheap compared to most (all?) other manufactures..
Indeed, it's a bit complicated.
I can tell you from my experience: when you pay $50 for 10 open-source boards, you actually get 5. When you send the documentation in, you get $20 back. So, if you want to get ALL 10 boards, don't make it open-source.
Otherwise, high quality, fast service, good experience.

Yes bu that would mean that if you declare it open source you are paying $18 for 5 boards rather than the equivalent $15 for 5 boards when it is not open source...
I think you aren't paying so much cos it's so complicated. It may help if 'Seeedstudio-Fan' could reply to clarify...
I would also recommend that the website is changed to the right spelling so it doesn't say 'serivce'
After a bit of searching, I can confirm that, from what I have found, it is the cheapest service for small orders. Even with 40pcs it seems that it is cheaper than most places because the postage from other fab houses is extortionate...
It would be very helpful if Seeedstudio would also offer an affordable plexiglass laser-cutting service. I think many people around this forum would be interested.
I think that the word to be focusing on was 'affordable'.
I wouldn't personally class $30 for 13x3.5cm affordable for a front/backplate
Maybe seeedstudio could do a service but it depends on whether they have a laser-cutter...
I think a lot of people on this forum would be interested in acrylic cut parts for spacing/board covering etc rather than an emphasis on front/backplates...
They (seeedstudio) must have a laser cutter or access to one, since they manufacture the Arduino harness, plus the monome box. Sooner or later, they will offer this service, I would guess.
I would prefer it to be sooner rather than later
Normally you get 10 tested boards with 30USD but if you choose Open source option,(it means we will keep 5pcs and sell them, all source file will be published online) you saved 12 USD by this . You can also choose No-Etest option to save another 5 USD. So the the minimum cost for 5pcs PCB (5cm X 5cm, 2layers) is 13 USD.

You can say it again. We are planning to provide those services. Just give us a little time.

So it is better to not get them open source unless you can only use 5 boards...
Otherwise it would be better to have it as a closed project because per-board it works out cheaper...
The laser cutting service definately is a good idea (i hadn't realised that they did other lasercutting stuff)
I have access to a laser cutter so personally I won't be using it but it is still a good idea...
Seeedstudios pricing is very competitive for small boards < 10cm sq but I wish they would offer a similar service for bigger PCB's say < 20cm sq.
I know they offer the Domino service but at $49 setup and $0.12 sq cm its hardly cheap. For example I've a board design that is 125mm x 95mm (to fit a standard enclosure I've got) which works out at $14.25 + $49 = $63.25 a board.
If you are looking for lots of larger boards then I would recommend looking at ourpcb... They do a service that is $50 tooling charge and then a small amount for each square cm (not sure how much it is but it is less than $0.12).
Once you have done one order you can re-order without paying the tooling charge but the board has to be the same and the minimum repeat order is $50 so you have to want a few hundred!
For single large boards I would go with batchpcb. After the $10 setup charge, the $2.5 sq inch charge would make it cheaper than other places if you only want one board...
So it is better to not get them open source unless you can only use 5 boards...
I think the "usual" case involves needing LESS than 5 boards, so the net effect is that your minimum entry cost goes down by letting Seeedstudio dispose of some of the extras instead of trying to do it yourself. That sounds pretty reasonable to me... (admittedly, there's a big difference between "I need one of these for my project" and "I need 30 of these for my class" and "I need 500 of these to strike it rich.")
I wonder what they charge for rev2 of your open source project, after you figure out why rev1 (published and all) didn't actually work? (at least, one of the things that always stops me from using professional board shops is my low confidence that MY work doesn't have silly errors.)
