Measure in photo

hi guys.
Hi, I'll start a project, do not know if this is the right forum or not.

would like a sensor that can measure wire rails on highway ultrasonic sensors I think not working

How would you do?

Learn English?

What are you trying to measure?
What are "highway ultrasonic sensors"?
Why do you think they are not working?

I mean I want to measure wire rails on highways so you get the distance in centimeters.

wire is 2cm wide Do you think you can measure with a normal ultrasonic sensor on such narrow surfaces.

why I ask is I want to be able to measure these distances on the side.

Hi.
I'm sorry but "wire rails' looses something in translation.

Can you post a picture or a diagram of what you mean please?

Thanks.. Tom..

You know what you want to do but nobody else does. You need to describe clearly what you are trying to do, drawings and photographs help.

When you say "wire rails on highways" do you mean the wire cable barriers that stop vehicles going of the road?
Those wires are probably about 2cm thick.
What "distance" is it you are trying to measure though and what do you mean "on the side".

If you are trying to measure something how big is the thing, how accurately do you want to measure it, how far from it will you be when you take the measurement, why are you trying to measure it?

Hi, I'll use this for a pilot survey to help others with a wide range of roads and different obstacles.

would also like to run at a speed when doing this.

The sensors will sit on each side of the car and measure the distance to different obstacles.

I have no experience of this help is endlessly grateful.

Distance from car about 1-2 m to obstacle
What sensor can i use and so on.
Han someone help me with program im a newbie as you already know.
Thanks
Sorry bad language from Sweden

I think that a LiDAR device would produce more reliable results, particularly at highway speed. RPLidar A1M8 - 360 Degree Laser Scanner Development Kit - RobotShop

Your English is better than my Swedish :) You might find that Google Translate would help though.

Okay so you have a real car, traveling on a real road, and you want to be able to sense wire cable barriers running along the side of the road about 1-2m from the car.

Maybe others will have a different opinion but I think this is an extremely hard problem and not something that can be done on an Arduino.

The barriers will be passing at speed. The horizontal and vertical position of the barrier relative to the car will be constantly changing. There will be gaps in the barrier. The cables are not infinite, at intervals the cables come together and are anchored in the ground. Other vehicles may get between your vehicle and the barrier. Weather conditions can change.

In short an absolute nightmare. That is why self-driving cars have cameras, lidar, radar, gps, you name it. Personally I don't think self-driving cars will live upto the hype mainly because there is no way local garages are going to be able to maintain the vehicles.

I know this is OT, but ...

Local garages won't have to service driverless cars. They will all be owned by huge corporations and people will just rent one when they need it. It will arrive outside your house (or wherever), you will get in, it will take you to your destination, you will get out, it will go away.

That is called a taxi, I can use them already but I have a car. Another problem with driverless cars is that in a city it will probably be quicker and cheaper to have them circle nearby rather than pay to park so congestion will go up. Of course pedestrians will just stop the traffic whenever/wherever they want to cross.

And so they should. Why should another person get priority just because s/he is sitting in an expensive hunk of metal polluting the planet.

Okay so this is untested.
Can lidar work maybe?

You cannot solve this problem with an Arduino.
It can be solved but only by spending a lot of money on processing power, equipment and software development.

Ok thank you all för answers

Sorry the answer could not be more positive.

Perhaps if you said why you want to have an Arduino project and gave some information on your skills and experience people might suggest projects that you would be able to do.

I have no experience in this.

I would be surprised if ultrasonic works, because there is no flat surface to reflect the sound reliably. This sounds like a fun project for computer vision.

There are lots or Arduino kits available. These include the components needed to complete a number of small projects. I would advise you get one of these and build your skills up, even simple projects are good fun and you will learn a lot from them.
