You worked as Production Engineer, and I worked as a Maintenance Engineer. You produce things that I maintain. Why should I have preventive/corrective maintenance schedule in much ahead of time when the things are made with guaranteed warranty?
The field realities are different; things might have faced over-stress called the turbulence which could not be apprehended at design time -- that's why Delta_G has said: this is the user who utters the word hopefully. The designer is not supposed to utter it; he will be be sacked by the Company. Look at the Pentium case -- the Designers knew that there was a flaw in the FPU Unit of the chip, but they remained silent until the British Scientist discovered it..!!!!
